To understand love we have to look at Love. God is Love. Jesus is Love. The spirit is Love. Love is their very nature and so if we want to understand what love looks like then it only makes sense for us to look at the Trinity. To the degree that we grasp the love of Jesus on the cross is the degree that we will understand love as it pertains to our lives and the lives of the people around us.
Love starts with Jesus. You cannot love others without Jesus. You cannot love the poor. You cannot love the world. You cannot even love your friends without the true love of Jesus flowing through your veins. You can try those things. You can try really hard, but at the end of the day you will come up short because Christ in us is our only hope. He is our only hope to display true love.
We are a fallen race. We have fallen away from God and therefore our own efforts to love come up short without the redemptive power of God. "Through Jesus, God was reconciling the whole world back to Himself." That includes our ability to love God, love others and love ourselves.
Love starts with Jesus. Any other form of love from any other worldview other than the Biblical worldview is merely a faint glimmer of the real thing.
